yo del lay yo del lay yo de lay hee hoooooooo

Yesterday afternoon I took my Mom out for a belated Mother’s day which included brunch as well as going to see The Sound of Music on the big screen. That’s right, at ye ol' movie theatre ‘twas a film from 1965 – though you would hardly know it from such a timeless epic tale. It’s a thing they got going on at Cineplex called The Classic Film Series and every month from September 2010 to August 2011 they showcase a different (you guessed it) classic film.

The Sound of Music has always been one of my favorite movies, if not my most favorite. It is so iconic for so many generations and really never grows old (even in spite of the lengthy running time). In addition to the singing and musical festive wonderfulness, stunning European scenery, and WWII era nostalgia that I love, what I continually love most about this film is the intense love story between Maria and Captain von Trapp – I swear they make me believe their hots for each other every single time. I always melt when the Captain hears the children singing for the first time, lets down his guarded façade and thanks Maria for bringing music ~ life, happiness, joy, fun, energy, emotional being back into his realm of existence. Right then and there the movie changes and there is a subtle yet so pulsingly intense connection brewing between Maria and the Captain that it almost makes you weak in the knees just watching it unfold. The most pivotal of these little mini moments of lovey dovey longing, culminates when they dance the Landler, an Austrian folk dance. I swoon every time. There are no words, the expressions convey so much, so intricately perfectly. I could watch that scene over and over and over again because it makes me smile a sweet sweet smile and swoon swoon swoon. La di da di laaaaaa. .

Truth be told maybe it’s more the fact that I’d love to be that close, held that tight, and looked at that longingly by monsieur Christopher Plummer. Swoon indeed.

Or maybe it’s the fact that I met my own husband doing some good ol’ folk dancing, though we didn’t look at each other at all as we held hands and twirled around those first times.

Or maybe not.

I’m going with Christopher Plummer.
