mini getaway stay-cation reminiscing

Seeing that it snowed last night, it's got me thinking to warmer sunnier days. And thinking to warmer sunnier places too. Alas, there's a long cold winter ahead, where the warmest I'll be is under a furry blanket with 3 sweater layers, extra socks, and my coziest of slippers on.

The wanderlust has me reminiscing about our last vacation, more like a stay-cation really when it was just going 1 hour out of the city to Blue Mountain. More of a "getaway" classification I suppose and kind of a fail. However, it's the last thing akin to a vacation we've had since London and Croatia last summer (well there was Vegas that I got to indulge in without the hubs, can't forget about Vegas!). But our Blue Mountain getaway is quite possibly the last thing resembling a vacation to be had for us for quite some time.

On that note, here's to reminiscing!

The Blue Mountain getaway was due to the fact that this past summer was jam packed with many weddings and wedding related events and festivities, not to mention other ceremonious events. It left pretty much zilch in the budget for a real vacay. Oh there were daydreams and excitement and even fantasy plans made for trips to New York or Chicago or even Montreal or Quebec City, anywhere that at least felt like going somewhere. But instead we opted for discovering the province of Ontario and heading up north to Blue Mountain in Collingwood.

Blue Mountain is typically a winter village, a ski resort. However, it's a great summery place too as there are lots of beaches nearby and picturesque views. That being said, we went beginning of September for our 2nd wedding anniversary, and apparently summer did not extend into the fall as it has the last few years. So our ideas of beaching it up and getting our tan on, were pre-empted by wind and rain. All in all, it was still nice to getaway.

We stayed at the Westin Blue Mountain, which for a "Westin" reputation hotel wasn't the nicest I've ever stayed at and definitely not for that price. But 'twas lovely none the less.

We spent the first day poolside, then wandered into the village for some grub and a ride up the gondola to the top of the mountain for some scenic views. Although we pretended they were views of some little mountain village in Europe and not northern Ontario. One can dream, no?

We also became models for the Ontario Tourism website. True story.

The next day the weather went to the dogs, and we spent most of it inside, twiddling our thumbs, wondering what the heck to do. I had initially made grand plans for going to the Scandinavian Baths and to the Scenic Caves. But it was freezing and there was torrential downpour. No thank you and no thank you.

Eventually the rain let up a tad and we decided to take the gondola up the mountain again and do the Scenic Caves. Well the place was closed even though it was supposed to be open. Fail.

We then decided to engage in some friendly couple competition via mini golf, only to make it halfway through before the sky once again clouded over and another torrential downpour ensued, this time one we got stuck and drenched in. Fail once again.

All that was left was a fancy shmance dressed-up meal at Oliver Bonacini's inside our hotel. Which after all that rain and wind, was a lovely way to warm up.

So our stay-cation getaway was a bit of a fail, but a romantic fail anyway.

Cheers to romance.
